Yvette N. Conyers recipient of the Liesel M. Hiemenz Scholarship has been a registered nurse for over 15 years and is currently a DNP student at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. She obtained her Post Masters Family Nurse Practitioner Certification from St. John Fisher College in 2013, her MS in Nursing Education from Roberts Wesleyan College in 2010, BS from the University of Rochester in 2007 and began her initial nursing degree at Monroe Community College, graduating in 2002.

Yvette currently works full time in academia as an Instructor of Clinical Nursing at the University of Rochester teaching both didactic and clinical courses for the Accelerated program for non-nurses and the RN to BS programs. She continues to work as an independent FNP providing clinical assessments to members in their homes.

Yvette is passionate about Transcultural Nursing which began when she held a previous position as the Nursing Director of Home Care of Rochester’s (HCR) African American Initiative, designed to reduce disparities among African American patients in home care. In this role, she became a Certified Transcultural Nurse based on the work with Dr. Madeline Leininger’s and her model of Culture Care Diversity and Universality. Because of this work in the community with preventing hospitalizations among older adult African Americans, Yvette was recognized as a Greater Rochester 40 under 40 African American Leaders.

Yvette is a member and active in many professional organizations including Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, New York Organization of Nurse Executives and Leaders (NYONEL), American Academy of Nurse Practitioner’s, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Beta Chi Chi Chapter and Transcultural Nursing Society. Ms. Conyers, who grew up in Rochester, has three siblings, and currently lives in Rochester, NY with her one son.

Yvette anticipates earning her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in May, 2018. The focus of her DNP project is assessment and evaluation of knowledge, skills and attitudes of Registered Nurse’s cultural competence in an urban acute care community hospital. She believes this project will assist in a future goal of addressing health care disparities and achieving health equity.
