Sunoz Soroosh

Sunoz "Sunny" Soroosh, RN, MPH is the recipient of the Columbia University-Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, Inc./J. Margaret Ada Mutch Scholarship. She is a MSN/Nurse-Midwifery student at Frontier Nursing University. She received her undergraduate education at the University of California, Berkeley where she graduated with honors with degrees in Public Health and Spanish. Her Bachelor’s in Nursing and Master’s were earned in Public Health at Columbia University. Sunny’s parents are from Iran, and she is fluent in English, Spanish, and Farsi (Persian). Although a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, California, Ms Soroosh has lived much of her adult life in New York City.

Traveling all over the world, Sunny has worked as an RN in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala (with Mayan midwives!), and currently works at a birth center on the Texas-Mexico border. As an RN she has worked in many different fields, including Rheumatology and Internal Medicine, but her true passion is women’s health. Before beginning her midwifery education program, Sunny was the Registered Nurse Coordinator for Planned Parenthood of New York City. In addition to her clinical work there, Sunny became a Certified Spanish Interpreter and also became involved in public relations, fundraising, and political activism for Planned Parenthood. Vogue, Huffington Post, and Time Out New York featured Sunny as an advocate for Planned Parenthood. She also spoke twice in front of the New York State Senate, as well as for many other panels and events in New York City.

Sunny’s goal is work to alleviate health disparities through health education and awareness, especially with regards to maternal/infant morbidity and mortality. She hopes to involve public health research and evidence-based practice in her midwifery career. She was inspired to become a midwife by her grandmother, who was a midwife at the largest public hospital for women in Iran. In her spare time, Sunny enjoys all types of dancing, especially Persian dance!
