Jennifer T. Alderman, MSN, RNC-OB, CNL, is the 2017 recipient of the Cynthia Davis Sculco Scholarship. Jennifer, a native of North Carolina, received a BSN from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1997 and worked as a labor and delivery nurse for about 9 years before becoming a nurse manager of two perinatal units.

She left her administrative role in 2008 to pursue a Master’s degree in nursing education. In 2010, Jennifer received a MSN from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has been a member of the UNC-Chapel Hill nursing school faculty since that time. Jennifer teaches maternal/newborn clinical, health assessment, and nursing leadership at the undergraduate level. At the graduate level, Jennifer teaches an outcomes management course for MSN and DNP students. Jennifer is currently a PhD student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Ms Alderman’s area of research interest is interprofessional education and she plans to examine its effect on quality, safety, and patient outcomes for her dissertation work. Jennifer was led to this work after having been a teaching assistant while pursuing her Master’s degree in an interprofessional education course. Jennifer has participated in multiple interprofessional learning activities as both a grad student and as a faculty member. She has long been a proponent of using simulation to improve patient safety and she plans to incorporate its increased use in her interprofessional education work to more effectively equip pre-licensure health professional students to practice collaboratively once they complete their education.
