Jared Kutzin


Jared M. Kutzin, DNP, MS, MPH, RN, CPPS, CPHQ, NEA-BC, FSSH is the recipient of the 2019 Judith G. Whitaker Scholarship. Jared currently works at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City as the Director of Emergency Medicine Simulation. He graduated from Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Science in Community Health Education and from Columbia University (NY) with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Jared then graduated from Boston University in 2007 with a Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Management and then completed his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. He then received a Master’s in Medical Education Leadership from the University Of New England College of Medicine. He is currently completing his PhD at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX.

Jared’s areas of interest are simulation-based education, educational technologies, and how educators can impact behavior change to improve the quality and safety of healthcare. He is specifically interested in emergency medicine and nursing, pre-hospital care, and disaster medicine. The NEF Inc. scholarship will support him in his penultimate year of doctoral education.

In 2012, Jared was one of the first nurses to complete the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program (CQFP) offered by the Greater New York Hospital Association and the United Hospital Fund and in 2015 he completed the Comprehensive Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship (CPSLF) offered by the National Patient Safety Foundation and American Hospital Association. In 2017, Jared was inducted as a fellow in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s Simulation Academy and in 2018 was recognized by the New York Academy of Medicine as a fellow. Jared is a member of the New York State Board of Nurses and the New York State Emergency Medical Services Council.

Jared is certified in healthcare quality (CPHQ), patient safety (CPPS), simulation operations (CHSOS), and as a Nurse Executive – Advanced (NEA-BC) and serves as the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) Sub-Committee Chair and an Accreditation Committee Site Reviewer. Jared has authored over a dozen peer reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, and serves as an Associate Editor for MedEdPORTAL, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Journal of Teaching and Learning Resources. He has presented internationally on topics including simulation-based education, nursing education, and patient safety.
