Gabriel Montague

Gabriel Montague is the recipient of the NEF M. Louise Fitzpatrick Scholarship. He is currently a third-year PhD student at The University of North Carolina Greensboro where his research is focused mainly on the development of successful future nurses. He received his BSN from UNCG in 2014 and MSN in Nursing Education from UNC Chapel Hill in 2018.

Gabriel has always been drawn to nursing education. Beginning his career at the bedside as a preceptor, he quickly fell in love with educating future nurses through the mentorship of students and new nurses alike. He strives to develop strong professional identity and critical thinking skills in every nurse he works with. As a future researcher in the field of nursing education, Gabriel hopes to identify and develop innovative strategies to bring the hard lessons of bedside care into sharp focus in the classroom in an engaging way that allows students to not only succeed but also fail safely.

Gabriel currently serves as a clinical instructor at UNCG, engaging students both in the didactic and clinical settings across a variety of clinical experiences from their first entry into the nursing role through to the students’ capstone experiences as they prepare for graduation. He also develops and maintains a month-long, faculty-led, study abroad experience each summer for junior nursing students to engage in Global Health studies in Spain.

In his free time, Gabriel is also active at the local and university level, serving as a board member of his local Sigma Theta Tau chapter, a Camp Nurse for local summer programs, and a representative of his School of Nursing at University of North Carolina Greensboro Faculty Senate meetings.

Upon receiving his PhD, Gabriel hopes to continue his work as an educator both in the classroom and at the bedside as well as engage with his students as a nurse researcher to better understand the regional pressures faced by his students, developing meaningful ways to support and engage these students in their learning. He is grateful for the financial support of the NEF M. Louise Fitzpatrick Scholarship, as it will help ensure he is able to complete his dissertation work and graduate on time.
