Becky Bowler

Becky Bowler is the recipient of the Norman and Alicia Volk/NEF Scholarship. She is currently attending Boston College in pursuit of a Master’s Degree in the Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner program. Becky received her Bachelors degree in nursing at Duke University and began her first nursing job at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA, first on a cardiac unit and the last 2 years on a Hematology/Oncology Bone Marrow Transplant unit.

Prior to nursing, she earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration at the University of Montana followed by certifications in Holistic Nutrition education at Bauman College in Santa Cruz, California. Ms Bowler spent 7 years in the corporate world, first in property management and then accounting management, followed by four years as a Nutritionist at Whole Foods Market. During these years, she was drawn to nursing while helping to care for her dying grandmother and uncle. She felt a new sense of purpose and yearning to understand how to best make them comfortable in their brief dying days.

While at Duke, Becky was co-president of the Duke University LGBT/Ally organization, gaining valuable leadership experience while promoting non-discriminatory care and acceptance for all. She currently holds a seat on the Brigham and Women’s Heme/Onc Practice committee, working to continually improve the nursing care that her health care team provides.

Becky’s primary professional goal is to specialize in Palliative Care, offering comfort care catered towards patients with chronic disease and advanced illnesses. She also has a personal and professional goal to give back and offer smaller more rural areas the medical access they should have available. Coming from a small rural town in Montana, Becky has a strong appreciation for access to specialized medical care and healthy food. Although nursing is a third career for her, it is the most challenging, yet fulfilling, line of work that she has ever done and she looks forward to continuing to making a positive impact as a leader and team player in Advanced Practice Nursing.
